چکیده

Article history: Received 18 January 2010 Received in revised form 1 April 2010 Accepted 27 May 2010 Atmospheric conditions for growth of ice crystals (temperature and ice supersaturation) are often not well constrained and it is necessary to simulate such conditions in the laboratory to investigate such growth under well controlled conditions over many hours. The growth of ice crystals from the vapour in both prism and basal planes was observed at temperatures of −60 °C and −70 °C under ice supersaturation up to 100% (200% relative humidity) at air pressures derived from the standard atmosphere in a static diffusion chamber. Crystals grew outward from a vertical glass filament, thickening in the basal plane by addition of macroscopic layers greater than 2 μm, leading to growth in the prism plane by passing of successive layers conveniently viewed by time-lapse video. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. The influence of radiation on ice crystal spectrum in the upper troposphere

This theoretical study is carried out to investigate the effect of radiation on ice crystal spectrum in the upper troposphere. First, an explicit expression is obtained for the ice crystal growth rate that takes account of radiative and kinetic effects. Second, the expression is used to quantitatively analyse how radiation broadens the ice crystal spectrum and then to reveal a new precipitation...

Simulating gas-aerosol-cirrus interactions: Process-oriented microphysical model and applications

This work describes a process-oriented, microphysical-chemical model to simulate the formation and evolution of aerosols and ice crystals under the conditions prevailing in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. The model can be run as a box model or along atmospheric trajectories, and considers mixing, gas phase chemistry of aerosol precursors, binary homogeneous aerosol nucleation, hom...

Laser-induced plasma cloud interaction and ice multiplication under cirrus cloud conditions.

Potential impacts of lightning-induced plasma on cloud ice formation and precipitation have been a subject of debate for decades. Here, we report on the interaction of laser-generated plasma channels with water and ice clouds observed in a large cloud simulation chamber. Under the conditions of a typical storm cloud, in which ice and supercooled water coexist, no direct influence of the plasma ...

Oxalic acid as a heterogeneous ice nucleus in the upper troposphere and its indirect aerosol effect

Heterogeneous ice freezing points of aqueous solutions containing various immersed solid dicarboxylic acids (oxalic, adipic, succinic, phthalic and fumaric) have been measured with a differential scanning calorimeter. The results show that only the dihydrate of oxalic acid (OAD) acts as a heterogeneous ice nucleus, with an increase in freezing temperature between 2 and 5 K depending on solution...
